FOUR ANCHORS

New Year’s Day, 2018

New beginnings. “With God, all things are possible.”- Christ Jesus (Matthew 19:26)

The Bible has a vivid account of the shipwreck experienced by Paul on his journey as a prisoner to Rome (Acts 27):

“Somewhere in the Adriatic Sea (the) ship was caught in a tempestuous wind-storm, called by translators, ‘Euroclydon.’ The ship was blown about like an eggshell for fourteen days in the teeth of this terrific storm, and then the passengers got to land on the island of Malta, on ‘broken pieces of the ship,’ with the entire cargo lost.

The thing that held St. Paul’s mind steady in the grip of the Adriatic Euroclydon was his four anchors of faith. In the midst of the crisis it was not the captain of the ship who was in command of the situation, nor the centurion of the cohort. It was the prisoner. He stood up on the deck, with the storm roaring through the broken rigging, and the frightened seamen, soldiers and passengers standing around him, worn and hungry, and instantly he, perhaps with chains on his hands, dominated the wild scene. … here on the deck, in the dark and in the storm, stood a man who was telling the group around him of the four anchors which held him firm and steady and unafraid, not only in the face of Euroclydons, but before the greater dangers of mobs and courts and headsmen. Here are his anchors:

I believe God;
His I am;
Him I serve;
He has given me those who sail with me.

Many a faith has been rebuilt after faith has gone to wreck in some Euroclydon.

The odd thing is that very often the solidest character, the greatest saintliness, comes after life has been broken. “I have come,” Christ said, “to save sinners”–broken vessels–persons whose lives have cracked under the strain.

We may well come back, then, at the end to the way St. Paul got to Rome and fulfilled his commission “to attest the gospel of the grace of God.” He, too, had broken health, broken time, a broken faith, a broken character, and a broken world around him, and he got to land on a broken piece of the ship that carried him.”

– excerpts from Rufus Jones, “When the Euroclydon is Blowing; Safe to Land on Broken Pieces of the Ship,” The Radiant Life, 1944.

Radiance

Christmas, 2017

Arise! Shine–be radiant with the glory of the Lord;
for your light is come,
and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you!

The sun shall be no more your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you;
but the Lord shall be to you an everlasting light,
and your God your glory and your beauty.

 – Isaiah 60, vs 1 & 19, Amplified Bible

But every good endowment that we possess
and every complete gift that we have received
must come from above, from the Father of all lights,
with whom there is never the slightest variation or shadow of inconsistency.

– James 1:17, The New Testament in Modern English,
J. B. Phillips, Revised Edition, 1972.

When we ask Jesus to live in us – accept Him as Lord (Guide) and Savior (the answer to life’s needs) – we are not initiating a new entity into our being so much as we are finally recognizing the Living Light that is already there. This is the Light of creation that renders us “in God’s image.”

Let there be light. Genesis 1:3

This is why born-again people experience a sense of “coming home.” They become more fully their true selves as God’s children. In being born-again, our latent spiritual selves emerge and embark on “The Way.”

In Him we live and move and have our being. Acts 17:28

SON of GOD – SON of MAN

Christmas is the re-enactment and celebration of the birth of a baby: Jesus of Nazareth. Who was he? How could an individual born in a remote region of the ancient world in humble circumstances have had a universal impact on the history of the world for the following 2000 years, and continuing? Even more dramatic is the fact that His effect on individuals–people like you and me, here and now–has been the engine of history’s evolution toward the goal of “peace on earth.” Humankind is still struggling to put an understanding – a concept – into words. – mjd

“Jesus Christ brought religion out of the heavens to the earth. He does not speculate, He does not theorize, He announces and illustrates and exemplifies a way and method of life. Religion and life with Him mean the same thing.

…the moment we go back to the primitive facts of Christianity, we find not a cold and rigid system of thought and belief, but a Life, a message, a personality–a manifestation of God and a revelation of the true meaning of humanity. In Him we have a Son of God and a Son of man living among men to show life on its true scale.

There is nothing in His message which does not bear directly upon our human life. He took not the nature of angels, He talked not of the angelic, the seraphic, the celestial realm, He admitted us into none of the secrets of a foreign world; He took the nature of men, He showed how a man might become a son of God and He unfolded the method and laws of the kingdom of heaven–the ideal social order in which men shall be sons of God and brothers one to the other.”

“…our age is concerned for the expansion of the individual life and for the regeneration of society. Now it is precisely here that the Gospel of Jesus Christ meets our need and fits our condition. His purpose is to give abundant life and to make all things new and we find His message constructive at every point. It simply needs to be applied…”

GRANDFATHER and the CHURCH BELL

As Christmas, 2017, comes near, I am deeply impressed with a memory of my grandfather. Kindly allow something personal – a brief reminiscence for this very moving part of the year. Grandfather, born 1876, was an uncomplicated, quiet, friendly man. He had an eighth-grade education, was a miner in deep coal mines of the region as a young man, owner (with Grandmother) of a village general store in mature / elder years; unassuming, but hard-working. Loved his picture-book home garden, fishing in the local lake for blue-gill, sunfish, cleaning them for the feast to follow. When my brother & I visited them in summers as very small children, he took us on long walks over the town bridge to fields full of wild flowers, ready for little hands to pick and take home to Grandmother. He took great delight in teaching us to stand on our heads – demonstrating precisely how it was done!

His generation, however, was not naive. They lived through both World Wars I & II and the Depression. Like countless others of the time, they demonstrated the depth of character and self-reliance such experiences produce and thrived on faith and the personal friendships of tiny-village life, church, and family.

As the post for today crystallized, these memories came flooding in because Grandfather was the designated “bell-ringer” for church. About 20 minutes or a half hour before the Sunday church service (the precise time escapes me), he invited me to go along when he walked the block from home to church. He opened the front door, and there in the foyer – wrapped around a hook on the wall – was the rope. After freeing it from the wall, he stood in the center of the entry-way, pulling the rope for the single bell in the tower above. Up–down–up–down, over and over, signaling to townsfolk that church would begin shortly. Time to come for Sunday School and the Service!

In my elder years, I have been happily surprised by the opportunity to arrange music for carillon – a much more sophisticated system of bells than this childhood memory relates. One never knows quite how the little folks in their life perceive early experiences. This is the time of year to love and appreciate them all a bit “extra,” and–as this poem makes clear–keep the hope of “peace on earth” flowing.

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along th’unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head:
‘There is no peace on earth, ‘ I said
‘For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.’

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
‘God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men.

‘

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

 – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

A New Order

“We are declaring that the Holy Spirit overshadowing you, working in you, now frees you from all the impressions of past experience, and gives you a new understanding of life and substance, and establishes in you a new order, quickens a new judgment, floods you with a new light that directs you in ways of peace and health and happiness.”

 – Letters of Myrtle Fillmore, 1936.

“For, look! I create new heavens
and a new earth;
past things will not be remembered,
they will no more come to mind.”
Isaiah 65:17
Complete Jewish Bible, Copyright © 1998 by David H. Stern

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes;
and there shall be no more death,
neither sorrow, nor crying,
neither shall there be any more pain:
for the former things are passed away.
And he that sat upon the throne said,
Behold, I make all things new.”
Revelation 21:4-5a
The Bible, King James Version

SHIFTING GOALS

“Progression to higher things is an eternal law of the soul…”

“One presses forward to a particular goal; and upon arrival there, new ideals have been presented to consciousness so that (one) may not always recognize when a desire is attained, for there in the distance he sees what has now become his goal and it is still beyond.

This receding goal … is but another proof of the boundlessness of human growth.

The goal sought can be won, and yet when won another and another appear. … With each unfoldment a broader and broader vista arises. … The goal has not receded … A grander and nobler desire has been born, lifting thought to higher aims and holier purposes.

When this height is reached one may know that he is blending himself with and into the Universal, that the Christ within is unfolding, that he has here in earth life entered into the Kingdom of Heaven, and therefore he cannot fail to realize that the highest of goals may be won, and his only limitations are represented by his desires, efforts and purposes.

SWEET PRAISE

Thanksgiving Day, 2017

LORD, to praise You is sweet,
And, HIGHEST, to sing to Your Name;
To morning, to tell of Your kindness,
And to night of Your truth,
On the Viol and Lute,
On the Flute and the Harp.
For Your works, LORD, delight,
I am cheered by the work of Your hands.

Psalm 92, Stanza 1
The Bible in Modern English
1906, Fourth Edition, translated by Ferrar Fenton

DESIRES OF OUR HEART

“There is an inexhaustible supply, and we are God’s beloved children for whom He is ever providing and to whom He has given His own life and wisdom and power and substance, the innate ability to do whatever is required in bringing our own soul to the Christ standard of living and serving others.”

 – Letters of Myrtle Fillmore

Look for the play on words in Psalm 37:4. “Desire” has a double meaning–the inner desire ( …of your heart.), and the fulfillment of that desire ( he will give you… ). When “delight in the Lord” is your first and foremost “treasure of the heart,” a valid desire comes from the Creator. It can be trusted as meant for you. The realization will come. If it seems delayed according to our human time table, trust that preparation for it is nevertheless part of the “treasure.” It will be a blessing to you and to those who benefit from your gift. Be thankful for the insight toward an ultimate goal and enjoy it to the full.  – mjd

Take delight in the Lord,

and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37:4
The Bible, Revised Standard Version

For where your treasure is,
there will your heart be also.

PROMISE

“I will never leave you or forsake you.”

Once we understand and fully accept the living God’s intent that we have “life abundant”– satisfying, productive, happy lives – trust is born. We receive our baptism: “This is my beloved Son [Child] in whom I am well pleased. (Matthew 3:17)” God is our Source, our Resource, our Rock, forever. In times of questioning, of need, of the “wilderness” (a time of “bewilderment”), the Creator – Sustainer always provides encouragement. Ask “what do I need to know about this, Father?” An answer will be provided, whether in words or circumstances. You are never alone.

 – mjd

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;
he will never leave you nor forsake you.
Do not be afraid;
do not be discouraged.”

Deuteronomy 31:8
The Bible, New International Version
(emphasis on “before” – mjd)

The WHOLE of MYSELF

“I cannot explain the whole of myself without bringing in God as part of my ancestry. And I do not look toward finding Him by going back in an infinite regress in time, but rather by going forward toward a Beyond within that forever draws me. … We do carry the biological past along with us, but again there is a nucleus of moral and spiritual realities that demands another type of ancestry for its explanation. … What is the origin of my love of truth and my passion for purity of heart and my readiness to give my life for a cause that ought to triumph? Somewhere along the line upward something has emerged and is operating that was not here before. In the face of obvious material conditions that surround us we have persistent confidence in spiritual realities, just because we are inwardly allied to the Spirit that works in us.

“But it is an unending revelation. Christianity, in the best sense of the word, is eternity revealed in time,

The silence of eternity
Interpreted by love.

“As the sap flows through the branches of the vine and vitalizes the whole organism so that it bursts into the beauty and glory of foliage and blossom and finally into fruit, so through the lives of men and women, inwardly responsive and joyously receptive, the life of God as Spirit flows carrying vitality, awakening love, creating passion for goodness, kindling the fervor of consecration and producing that living body, that organism of the Spirit, that ‘blessed community,’ which continues through the centuries the revelation of God as love and tenderness and eternal goodness.”
